Project Update

The City is progressing with the detailed design of the Wanneroo Recreation Centre New Sports Hub, located at Scenic Park, Wanneroo.

The new Sports Hub is designed to support a wide range of recreational and community activities, with a strong focus on accessibility, inclusivity and providing long-term benefits to serve our growing community.

Community engagement was previously undertaken during the concept design phase of the project in 2023, following earlier consultation with stakeholders and user groups between 2019 and 2022. This updated design now presents a more detailed vision of the facility layout, including the building footprint and surrounding landscape.

Changes to the building’s appearance and layout have been made to enhance user experience and improve accessibility. Additionally, the changes ensure environmental and bushfire safety compliance, strengthen connectivity with the nearby Wanneroo Recreation Centre and better support the community’s functional needs.

The location of the building has been moved eastward to mitigate high-risk bushfire exposure and retains high value trees along Scenic Drive.

Subject to the outcomes of the community consultation, the City anticipates that construction of the new Sports Hub will commence in June 2026.

Background

Through community consultation and a Needs and Feasibility Study completed in 2019, the need for upgrades to the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre was identified. This included the addition of two indoor multi-sport courts to better support local sporting activities and community groups.

The City has since secured $5 million in State Government funding to support the upgrades, which will be delivered in two key stages:

  • Stage 1 - The design and construction of a new Sports Hub; and
  • Stage 2 - Redeveloping the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre into a Community Hub.

Following continued planning and investigations for the development of Stage 1, the City undertook community engagement during the concept design phase in 2023/24 for the Wanneroo Recreation Centre New Sports Hub.

As the project progressed into the detailed design phase, key changes were made to the building’s appearance and functional layout to enhance user experience, improve accessibility and ensure alignment with environmental and bushfire safety requirements. These updates have influenced both the facility’s location and the design of the surrounding landscape.

Design changes

In addition to the proposed change to the location of the facility, there have been some minor changes to the design itself. These have primarily been to address the fragmented layout of the previous design and consolidate all internal spaces within a single building footprint.

The original internal footprint of the facility measured approximately 3,570m², with the updated design now proposing 3,709m². While this represents only a minor increase, the transition from the fragmented layout of the original concept to the new design may give the impression of a more significant expansion.

The new Sports Hub aims to complement future upgrades to the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre, as a modern Community Hub. The co-location of these facilities aims to enhance opportunities for recreation, social connection and community activities, while taking steps to protect Scenic Park’s unique environmental values.

Environmental Considerations

A number of additional studies and investigations have been conducted since the 2023 concept design, informing key updates to the building’s design and location within Scenic Park.

The investigations undertaken have addressed the following:

  • Aboriginal Cultural Heritage.
  • Retention of significant tree canopy on the site.
  • Preservation of identified long-necked turtle nesting sites.
  • Compliance with updated bushfire safety requirements.
  • Protection of the wetland buffer zone, which provides habitat for local flora and fauna and helps manage stormwater runoff.

As a result of these investigations, the location and orientation of the proposed Sports Hub have been refined by moving the facility further away from sensitive environmental areas (including the wetland zone and known turtle hatching sites) to avoid vegetation clearing within the area and to minimise environmental impact, while still maintaining full functionality.
