Background

Tourism plays an important role in the City of Wanneroo, bringing benefits to the local economy and community. However, managing visitor growth while caring for the environment and supporting local wellbeing can be a challenge.

To help guide future planning, researchers from ECU’s Centre for Tourism Research are working with the City of Wanneroo to develop a new Destination Sustainability Index (DSI). This tailored tool will assess how tourism impacts the environment, local economy, visitor experiences, and resident wellbeing.

By gathering perceptions from residents, visitors, businesses, and government agencies, and combining these with data, the DSI will highlight what’s working well and identify opportunities to improve tourism sustainability outcomes into the future.
